Dental hygiene is just as important for our pets as it is for us. Regular care of your pet’s teeth will help prevent dental problems developing and help to keep your pet healthy, as well as preventing stressful and expensive veterinary treatment. The main cause of dental problems are a lack of a regular dental care regime and feeding an inappropriate diet.

Step 1

Begin by lifting your pet’s lips to expose the teeth, build on this by giving them lots of fuss and praise. Once your pet is used to having their mouth touched on the outside, start running your finger along their teeth. At this stage, we recomend introducing the Beaphar Finger Toothbrush.

Step 2

Once your pet is accustomed to having their mouth touched, introduce them to a toothbrush and toothpaste in a similar way. Start by squeezing a small amount of toothpaste onto your finger and let them lick it off.

Step 3

Once they are used to the taste of the toothpaste, introduce the toothbrush by letting them lick the toothpaste off it.

Step 4

When your pet is comfortable with this, it is time to combine all the elements of training; brush a few teeth at first and gradually build it up until all the teeth can be brushed.
